Hey y'all! I've been on spring break this week and on Tuesday I shadowed Dr. Campen's office in Savannah. Here was my experience.
I arrived around 7:45am and met the PA, medical assistant, and Dr. Campen. Around 8 was when the first patient arrived to have a full body scan done to check for any cancerous spots. Dr. Campen ended up having to take some mole samples for a biopsy. She removed the mole with a scalpel, and while I was watching I got very light headed. I laid down with an ice pack and ate an orange and waited for the next patient. When the next patient came, Dr. Campen took more samples of moles, but this time I looked away and was fine. I was really appreciative of Dr. Campen for letting me interact with the patients by taking pictures of the skin spots on their iPads and titling them for patient documentation. I also applied cream to the patients' skin once a spot had been removed. The medical assistant was so informative and helped me develop an understanding of each procedure. Overall, I loved the experience and hope to shadow Dr. Campen and her lovely team again this summer!
Prior to shadowing, I was expecting to treat patients for a range of issues like acne, redness, etc., but instead most of the patients had issues concerning skin spots and skin cancer. This really emphasized the importance of protecting your skin in the sun for me and showed me that the sun is not something to take lightly. Please always do your best to wear and reapply sun screen this summer!!!
I look forward to doing more shadowing and will keep ya'll updated! Talk soon!
XOXO, Sophie
